Picture update ~ Finally!!!!

Finally getting around to updating with a few photos! A few weeks ago, I blogged about the tomatoes turning orange.  Here's a link to the post, with a photo now!

Also, I wrote about about "Who do you look like?" and mentioned who I thought Kevin looked like and the one time I've been mentioned to look like someone else as well.  Here are the photo's I mentioned.  I'll have Kevin scan them in, so I can get better copies (I just took photo's of them because I don't remember how do scan!  Whoops!!).

When looking for the top photo, it was like strolling down memory lane.  It was a Sweet Sixteen party for a friend of ours ~ Cortney ~ she's now married for just over 12 years and has 2 girls.  Time is flying crazy like!  Think I may have to pull a few other photos out, to be scanned, and put up on facebook.  So neat to see these girls married (or soon!) and having kids.  Granted, in that photo, Kevin and I weren't even engaged either.  We were engaged that August!  16 years ago on 8/7/12.

 

Who do you look like?

I don't get many folks telling me that I look like "so & so". At one point in time, someone told my mother-in-law, that I looked like Geena Davis based off of Kevin's and my engagement photo.  Hhmm, not so sure!

Kevin on the other hand, gets told he looks like George Lucas.  Funny aside, during 2011 Christmas Choir Practice, our worship director said the band had "George Lucas, Pocahontas before she cut her hair, and Reba McEntire".  There was a good chuckle if you knew the band.

Anyway, today while listening to Pandora, an Eric Clapton song came up.  The cover of the album made me think of Kevin.  It struck me how Kevin looks similar to both.  He'll be quick to retort, "I may look like him, but I don't have his bank account!"  So I leave you with a couple photos to ponder what my husband looks like!

And yes, I am still "missing" my camera cord!  And yes, I do have photos of Kevin on my Mac, but will look through those later to see what I have.  Come back tomorrow, or some time soon, and maybe I'll post our engagement photo and some of Kevin and you can let me know what you think.

We actually had professional school pictures this year!  With a photographer!  With the usual blue back ground!  (I've had the disc with photo's on it for almost a month and am just getting to this ~ okay, blame my computer issues! ;) )

I finally got Picasa working on my computer, so I've was able to make a photo collage!! I'm excited because it makes my blog more personal. I just think it's to cool now! Let me know what you think. These photo's were taken while on vacation in Tennessee.

My first blog post of 2009 is long overdue!! Eleven days to be exact. The first part of those days, Kevin was still off and we did a lot of reorganizing around the house. I had gotten book shelves (yes, bookshelves) for Christmas and was busy rearranging a room around those said shelves. What's odd, is that since I started blogging, I take pictures of just about everything so that I can post them too. I've even started a post, paused so I could take pictures, come back and upload said photo's. This time, nope, no pictures. Maybe if I get back into Wordless Wednesday.

Last week we began school again. It was difficult for all us to get back into the routine of school, bedtimes, library, Scouts, church events, bible studies, winter swim, yada, yada, yada. On top of that, I managed to come down with bronchitis. I've been on a few meds for three days now, feel a bit better, but no where close to 100%. So, blogging in 2009, will be off to a slow start.

More to come, though, in the tales of a homeschooling family. Ours boys will be celebrating their 9th and 6th birthdays in coming days.

Laundry Basket Boys

Some things in life never seem to change. We'd finished folding laundry - last week maybe - and were sitting around reading "Hardy Boys". It didn't seem to take long before the boys found their way into the laundry basics. They were totally content, just sitting there, listening. Guess they like small places. Found a photo from about four years ago. Then, they could share a basic. To funny!!

Another Not Wordless Wednesday

NEGATIVE SPACE ART PROJECT

We've been working through "Snowflake Bentley" last week and this week.  Today, we worked on Negative Space.  Don't recall where I found the idea for negative space, but it was a fun art project for the boys to work on.  Here's what we did:

1. start with two favorite colors of construction paper
2. cut one in half and set one half aside
3. fold larger sheet in half (optional) to give kids a reference point
4. draw a design or half of a scene on smaller piece of paper
5. cut out scene or objects
6. lay out the parts cut from the half sheet along the fold forming half the design
7. the remaining parts are placed on the opposite side of the full sheet in locations opposite those from which they were cut
8. glue parts down

Finally Friday!!

Science Friday's just aren't cutting it.  Occasionally we have good experiement's that are photo worry, but more often, not.  Being the last school day before Thanksgiving Break, it was hard to get through.  We managed and everyone was more than happy to put school supplies away for a week.  Still amazes me though, that they'll sit and listen to books so easily, or watch an "educational" video without batting an eye.  Having taken the stress out of most of the school day sure has helped the overall school experience.

For fun today, we started snapping photo's for possible Christmas cards.   First round wasn't to bad, but may need to redue the family ones to have the letters show up better.  Will see what we can do.

Monday Musing's

I've been working on Christmas decorations the last few days.  I have been painting the letters in the word "NOEL" gold.  I'd seen this in a Southern Living Christmas 2008 book and really liked it.  Hoping to getting some family photo's with each of us holding a letter and some individual shots, too, for a frame that has been on the wall (for a while now) with four empty slots.  I've taken a few pictures of the letters in my dining room window, which turned out really cool, but realized that my Five in a Row ornament's were in the shot.  I might be able to crop them out but haven't taken the time yet.  I hope to try a little later in the day.

 In the same book, there was a photo of hung stockings with a letter dangling with the stocking.  Thought this would be a cool thing to do as well.  So, the eight letter are almost finished. 

It's amazing how many coats of paint are needed, when using gold, to get it covered.

Got to the pictures, as you can see.  The gold doesn't show up well.  But when we get to family photo's taken, I'll post those.

Proud Parent Moment

Today's post won't be about Science. I know it's heartbreaking (hehehe, maybe not). Pack 683 had a uniform inspection at our Pack Meeting last night. Our Thing One won for his den. Woo Hoo!! He was excited because the prizes for each winner were a "I'm Proud of My Cub Scout" bumper sticker, a box of Boy Scout Popcorn, and a build a car type thing - similar to pine wood derby cars. He really liked the sticker because "Dad's car doesn't have one yet!!" This morning all he wants to do his build his car. Thing Two is kind of bummed because he wanted a car too.

"Our Piece of Earth"

I have been so distracted during school today by the flurry of birds coming to the feeder.  There's been a change in birds about every 10 seconds it seems, with some "sitting" on the hook, porch roof, or ground, just waiting their turn.  It does seem we have a few bullies - pushing others out.  Kind of neat that some of the pictures, I was able to get the birds with their wings fully extended.

This was a pretty picture from our deck looking into the park land.  It's this view that makes it hard to move from an awkward layout of a house and narrow lot.  The fall colors are such vibrant yellows, oranges, and reds.  Not to mention there are plenty of places to go hiking.

Halloween Pictures

Here are my young padawan's. They were dressed as Qui-gon and Obi - won. Their Jedi robs were going to be Christmas gifts, but when they asked to be Star War Jedi for Halloween, the robs came early.

Science Friday's

We've been "rowing" the Pumpkin Runner by Marsha Diane Arnold, Pictures by Brad Sneed this week in school.  The story was "inspired by Cliff Young, a 61 year old farmer from Victoria, Austrialia, who shuffled from obscurity to national prominence in 1983 when he defeated younger opponents in an 875 kilometer (542 mile) run between Sydney and Melbourne, cutting nearly two days off the record.  He won $10,000 for winning the race, which he split with the other runners."

For science, we took a look at hot air balloons and the density of hot air and cold air.  We put balloons on three 20 ounce water bottles, then left one on the counter, put one in hot water, and one in ice water.  It was amazing how quickly the one in hot water inflated and the one in ice water "sucked" in the balloon.

A very cool science moment, at least for a few moments.

Cedar Creek

My eldest son and I went camping this past weekend to Middleton, VA with his Cub Scout Pack.  This has become an annual camping trip to Cedar Creek where part of the American Civil War took place on 19 October 1864.  It's hard to imagine, that on all these rolling acres, so many lives were lost, while fighting for what was considered basic freedoms.

It was an enjoyable time with my son.  It was probably the most time we'd spent together, without his brother, in 5 3/4 years.  We spent a lot of time just hanging out and walking around looking at the living history exhibits, learning about cannons, and watching different aspects of the war being re-enacted.

It had been forecasted that it would be cold, so both Friday and Saturday nights thermometers were set out.  Saturday, we woke to cool weather, cool enough to go through a lot of hot chocolate.  Sunday, though, it was 31 degrees.  There was frozen dew on the tents, a wet dish cloth was stiff, and the scouts had earned there Polar Bear Patch.  The warm air in the van, on the way home, felt wonderful.  Being clean and a nap that afternoon was a welcome change.

How to Make Apple Pie

This is the title of the book that we "rowed" this week.  It has been a fun fall type book to row.  We took a look at England, Sri Lanka, Italy, Jamaica, France, and Vermont.  We also worked with measuring cups, went over evaporation and set up some salt water to evaporate for science, looked at street scapes for Art and just had fun with school this week.  The best part was making the apple pie today, a first for me.  Below is a picture of how it turned out, not to bad for a first time!!

Picture updates

It's been awhile since I've loaded pictures onto my blog.  These are from the last week!!  We've lived here for just over six years and this is the first time we've taken the time to photograph "wildlife".  This is one the main reasons I don't have flowers in our front yard.

Vacation Highlights

Hi Readers!!  If you are here to look for the 5 minute mug of chocolate cake, it's the next post down.  These pictures are highlights from our vacation in the Poconos, PA.  We saved well over a hundred photos and deleted probably the same amount.  The joys of having a digital camera.

We were on a Mountain (long walk to the unit, and about 6 steps up) which made unloading the van difficult with Kevin still on crutches.  Things got into the unit and vacation began.  The above picture was out the door of the place we stayed at.

We were able to use the outdoor pool for one day before it closed for the season.  The indoor pool had an umbrella like thing that water came out of .  The boys enjoyed it.

Here we are after dinner at the Dansbury Depot, a working train station which began in 1856.  The boys have such a fascination with trains, that it made going out to dinner a great trip.  Here is a link to the history of the station.  Also take a look at the picture, because my hubby figure out how to walk with out the crutches - woohoo!!

Our first stop for our fun day was the Crayola Factory.  There was a lot to do and see there.  You could make hats, windsocks, puppets, play with side walk chalk, see how crayons are made, dance and see your shadow change colors, play with modeling clay, make rub drawings, and so much more.  We even got a discount because we homeschool.  

Last but not least stop, on our fun day, The Martin Guitar Factory.  My hubby enjoys playing guitars, basses, mandolins, banjo and for his birthday wanted to take a tour of how C.F. Martin & Company make their guitars.  It really was interesting all that goes into making one, the tools they have had made to maximize the amount of wood used, and so much more.  If you a carpenter it would we worth a tour just to see the process.  The highlight for Kevin was being able to play guitars that are WAY out of his price range.
